The. authors have tried to evaluate the psychiatric problems and psychodynamics of the psychotic visitors who had visited Seoul and admitted to mental hospital by policemen.
The materials were collected from the in-patients of The Seoul Municipal Mental Hospital, during one year from May 1, 1969 to April 30, 1970. During investigation period, 50 cases of psychotic visitors to Seoul could be sellected. These subjects are estimated at 10. 77 percent of all admission cases, and at 23, 48 percent ,of the cases refered by polices.
They are 36 years old in mean age. Most of them are lower in socioeconomic status and educational level, and come form rural area. The cases without living home or family are, however, only 8 cases.
Eight cases have history of previous admission to mental hospital, and 42 cases have not any admission history, even if 38 cases of them are chronic in their illness, They are schizophrenia in 44 cases (88%), manic state of manic depressive illness in 4 cases(8%), paranoia in 2 cases(4%). The paranoid schizophrenia and paranoia were estimated at 74 percent(37 cases).
The motivation of visiting Seoul was classified as Table 2; the cases motivated by delusion are 41 cases and the ones by other conditions are 9 cases. the cases motivated by political delusion were estimated at 24 cases including the 15 cases who visited The President¢¥s House. Four cases were motivated by religious delusion, 2 cases by litigious purpose, 6 cases visited Seoul for getting job, 3 cases for appealing some problems to public office, 2 cases for being released from the persecutor. And other 9 cases visited Seoul for sight-seeing(1), for visiting the relatives (2), and with obvious purpose (4) or wandering (2). Even if there are various purpose, the basic motivation is to get some objects to help themselves.
Above results were discussed at the point-view of social psychiatry and psychodynamism. Their sociopsychiatric characteristics were discussed as a pattern of compensation of social and individual inferiority by fantastic way. And their hypothetic psychodynamism was made with Cameron¢¥s concept of paranoid pseudcommuonity.
